Wendy Simmons is a landscape, pastel artist and is inspired by many beautiful scenes around Droitwich, Worcester and the Malvern Hills. Wendy has always had a passion for art, however, it only truly developed when her beauty business had to close during the Covid lockdowns.
She favours an impressionist style and enjoys creating bright, evocative and uplifting scenes with soft and hard pastels. Wendy feels the pastel sticks are an appendage of her fingers; with that offering a looser and expressive approach to her work. The rich, vibrant pigments are used in a unique, wet underpainting and then she builds up layers of pastel and fixative.
Most recently, Wendy has been educated by popular pastel artists such as Karen Margulis and Jacob Aguliar. In the early 2000’s she had personal tuition from the late South African oil painter, Denzil Herring.Wendy paints in her home studio and mainly uses photographs she has taken for re-creation. However, Wendy has taken several commissions and some of her other original work and prints are for sale at wendysimmonsart.co.uk.
Wendy occasionally exhibits her work in local venues and businesses in conjunction with the Droitwich Arts Network, with whom she volunteers as Membership Secretary and social media tech. She has also given online and in person demonstrations for local art groups. Most recently, Wendy was commissioned by the Friends of Droitwich Railway to create two images that represent loved, landscapes of Droitwich to go on blocked, window recesses of the Brunel building, situated on the railway platform. These enlarged images printed on aluminium can be seen there today.
Some of Wendy's original artwork and fine art prints are now for sale at the Jinney Ring Arts and Craft Centre, Hanbury Road, Hanbury, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, B60 4BU. https://www.jinneyring.co.uk
